Although European Union’s (EU) Eastern Partnership (EaP) policy is not directly related to EU enlargement, the EU doors remain open for EaP states. Such opinion, at the close of the EU EaP Civil Society Conference, was given by the Latvian Foreign Minister, Edgars Rinkēvičs. It is important for the EaP states to continue with reforms, even when they can be difficult, the Foreign Minister pointed out. Rinkēvičs reminded that, at the time, when the Baltic States expressed their interest in joining the European Union and NATO many foreign representatives were skeptical, however their determination and implementation of reforms helped them reach the aims. Creation of mechanism reducing the negative effects of propaganda, increase of NATO and EaP state cooperation in deterring new hybrid wars, and granting a visa-free regime for Georgia and Ukraine. These and other recommendations were presented, and incorporated, in the recommendation paper of the EU Eastern Partnership Civil Society Conference. These recommendations were presented to the Foreign Minister of Latvia, Edgars Rinkevics, and Johannes Hahn, the European Commission for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations, and will later be presented to the Riga Eastern Partnership Summit. The 4th Baltic Guards camp will be held in Latvia from 10th to 14th of August, 2015. More information about the camp is available and will be regularly updated in the RJC web site that is specifically devoted to the project: Click Here
From the civic initiative for the three Baltic states, the camp is growing in terms of state representation, resources devoted to the project, and visibility of the camp. In 2015, the organizers (LATO and the RJC) are planning to expand participation by involving the UK and Norwegian relevant movements. The objective of the camp is also to develop audio-visual materials about the camp proceedings for national and international audience.
Media training, to improve youth guards’ skills, will become a tradition for the camp in Latvia in 2015. Camp evaluation questionnaires have shown that the camp is the only opportunity for the Baltic youth guard movements to operate in international environment, learn about regional security issues, and interact with the Baltic youngsters in international environment. The project has also become an essential knowledge transfer opportunity for states that are represented during the project. Lasīt tālāk …
