Latvian Transatlantic organisation (LATO) in cooperation with Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, as well with support of NATO Public Diplomacy Division is organizing a competition for Latvia’s students and active youngsters „NATO 60 years of experience – quo vadis?”

The goal of the competition is to access and promote the knowledge and interest among Latvia’s students about the issues of NATO and international and Latvia’s security, thus encouraging political involvement of young generation, independent research work, improvement of analysis and erudition as well as understanding of the decision making processes.

In the framework of this project students and youngsters (18-26 years old) have to join in teams of two, together elaborate an essay “NATO 60 years of experience – quo vadis?” and analyze the political and military aspects of NATO (NATO partnerships, further enlargement, NATO military role – Article nr.5 and out-of-area operations), as well as Latvia’s experience as NATO member state.

The essays have to be submitted till March 9, 2009 and contain a constructive analysis of NATO policy towards issues mentioned above. Meanwhile they have to reflect a personal opinion of the authors which should be built on strong and liable argumentations.
Submitted essays will be evaluated by four independent experts from Latvian Transatlantic organisation, Latvian Institute of Foreign Affairs, Latvian Ministry of Defence, and Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

On March 16 the results will be announced and best 28 teams will be invited to take part in the NATO summit simulation game organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia. During the simulation, which will take place on March 27, a special commission consisting of representatives of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, LATO, Ministry of Defence of Latvia, universities and non-governmental organisations will evaluate the work of the teams and choose six best teams.
