Talks on Security and Foreign Policy: 5 years in Moscow. Has Russia really changed?

18:00LATO will host a discussion with Ambassador of Kingdom of Denmark to Latvia H.E. Per Carlsen who spent 5 years in Moscow as Danish Ambassador to Russia before his appointment to Riga.

The Ambassador will speak about his experience working in/with Russia through different eras: Soviet Russia and modern Russia. The event will be held in the context of the expected visit of President of Latvia Valdis Zatlers to Moscow to offer a platform for open debate on how much Russia has changed in terms of its domestic politics and foreign policy for the last 5-10 years, reflecting also on its interests in the post-Soviet region.

Talks on Security and Foreign Policy: Juris Ozoliņš

On April 7, 2010 LATO hosted a discussion with Latvia’s independent energy expert Juris Ozoliņš. The discussion took place in the big hall of the Latvian Academic Library with more than 35 people attending, among them experts of the energy sector, researchers, businessmen, representatives of political parties, non-governmental organisations, students and others. The discussion was devoted to the topical issues of Latvia’s energy policy in the regional context.

Talks on Security and Foreign Policy: Jānis Eichmanis

On March 10, 2010 LATO hosted a discussion with Latvia’s Permanent Representative to NATO, Amb. Jānis Eichmanis. The discussion took place in the big hall of the Latvian Academic Library as the LATO office could not accommodate all those who wanted to attend the event. In total, more than 50 people took part in the discussion, among them a lot of youngsters and students of social sciences.

Talks on Security and Foreign Policy: Jānis Sārts

On March 3, LATO launched a discussion series „Talks on Security and Foreign Policy”, whose aim is to to establish a tradition of having informal open debates on foreign and security policy issues; to facilitate a dialogue between policy makers and wider society; to provide a platform for exchange of ideas and opinions on actual foreign policy issues; and contribute to the creation of Latvia’s expert community.

LATO launches a series of discussions „Talks on Security and Foreign Policy”

Despite the vibrant public and cultural life, there is still no place in Riga where people can meet with experts, academics, diplomats or state officials for an informal talk over a cup of coffee/tea on important security and foreign policy issues. Given the lack of communication between the responsible state institutions (e.g. the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs) and the wider public in explanation of Latvia’s foreign and security policy agenda, the Latvian Transatlantic organization with the support of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation intends to organise regular discussions for wider public with prominent Latvian and foreign experts on foreign affairs, security policy and  international relations.
