Secretary General of LATO Sigita Struberga: Preparing for the introduction of a comprehensive national defence system
One of the most pressing topics of the present is the introduction of Latvia‘s comprehensive national protection system, which is clearly considered to be an important issue in strengthening our national security. While the general public and the responsible authorities are optimistic about the implementation of such a system, there are a number of significant challenges. A group of researchers from the University of Latvia‘s Institute for Social and Political Studies (LU SPPI), including the Secretary General of the Latvian Transatlantic Organisation Sigita Struberga, are conducting a study on the subjective perception of safety of Latvian residents with the support of the Latvian Council of Science. The purpose of this publication is to look at possible complications that could potentially hinder the introduction of comprehensive defence in Latvia.
“The comprehensive defence of the country does not only mean the love of the motherland and the willingness to defend it with weapons (which, according to statistics, is not so great either). This is actually a much deeper process of transforming society, which demands the willingness, readiness and capacity of all citizens to engage fully,” – says the Secretary General of the Latvian Transatlantic Organisation Sigita Struberga and the head of the Department of Political Science of the University of Latvia Iveta Reinholde.
