Chairwoman of the Board of LATO Žaneta Ozoliņa participates in a discussion about European values
On December 15, 2020, Latvijas Radio organised a web conference through Zoom, as part of its “European Week”. The topic of the debate was: “European values and how to strengthen them through and beyond Europe”. The debate took place within the framework of the Euranet Plus editorial project.
European values: what are they, how to preserve them and how to strengthen them? These and other issues were discussed in the Latvian Radio broadcast “Two hemispheres” with European Parliament deputies Sandra Kalniete and Dace Melbārde and Professor of the University of Latvia, Chairwoman of the Board of the Latvian Transatlantic Organisation Žaneta Ozoliņa.
When it comes to values, the European Union is constantly examining both the understanding of its values and the willingness of Member States to maintain these values, whether it would be a rule of law, democracy, corruption, migration or gender equality. Professor Žaneta Ozoliņa points out that the beauty and advantage of European values is that we live in a democratic union and people can discuss their values and put them at the forefront. She points out that freedom and equality are the roots of the foundations from which other values grow – parliamentarism, diversity of parties and the existence of ideas – these are the result of the existence of freedom. Understanding values isn‘t just emotion, but also knowledge.
